Originally introduced as E-A-T in Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines, the additional "E" for Experience was added in 2022 to emphasize the value of firsthand, practical experience with a topic. While E-E-A-T is not a direct ranking algorithm, it represents the qualities that Google's algorithms are designed to identify and reward.
Each component of E-E-A-T addresses a different dimension of credibility. Experience asks whether the content creator has direct, personal experience with the subject — for example, a product review written by someone who actually used the product. Expertise evaluates whether the creator has the knowledge and qualifications relevant to the topic. Authoritativeness considers whether the website and creator are recognized as go-to sources within their field. And Trustworthiness — which Google describes as the most important element — assesses the overall reliability, transparency, and accuracy of the page and site.
E-E-A-T matters most for what Google calls "Your Money or Your Life" (YMYL) topics — subjects where inaccurate information could affect a person's health, financial stability, safety, or wellbeing. For these topics, search engines apply particularly rigorous quality standards, favoring content created by qualified experts on authoritative, trustworthy websites. But E-E-A-T is relevant across all topics; it simply matters more when the stakes are higher.
To demonstrate E-E-A-T on your website, implement several practical measures. Display clear author information with relevant credentials and experience. Maintain an about page that establishes your organization's authority and history. Include citations and references to authoritative sources. Publish based on genuine expertise and real experience. Maintain transparent contact information and privacy policies. Earn mentions and links from other authoritative sources in your field. And ensure your content is consistently accurate, well-researched, and regularly updated. These signals collectively build the trust that both search engines and users are looking for.
