Schema Markup

Category: Technical SEO

A structured data vocabulary that helps search engines understand the meaning and context of web page content. Schema markup enables rich results like star ratings, FAQs, and recipe cards in search results.

Schema markup is structured data added to a page, almost always as JSON-LD in the head, that describes what the page is about in a vocabulary machines already understand. It comes from schema.org, a shared vocabulary supported by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Yandex. It does not directly raise rankings. Its value is that it removes ambiguity about what a page and its entities are, which helps both rich results and the answer engines that need to attribute facts.

What is Schema Markup?

Schema markup, based on the Schema.org vocabulary, is a form of structured data that you add to your web pages to help search engines understand not just the text on your page, but the meaning behind it. It is, in essence, a shared language between website owners and search engines that makes content machine-readable in a precise, unambiguous way. When implemented correctly, schema markup can unlock rich results in search: enhanced listings with star ratings, prices, availability, FAQ dropdowns, event dates, and many other visual enhancements.

The practical benefits of schema markup are twofold. First, it improves search engine comprehension of your content. When you mark up a product page with Product schema, a search engine knows with certainty the product name, price, availability, and review rating; it does not have to guess from the surrounding text. Second, schema markup makes your search listings more visually prominent and informative through rich results, which consistently achieve higher click-through rates than standard text listings. A listing with a star rating, a price, or an FAQ dropdown simply draws the eye, and stands out, in a way that a plain blue link cannot.

The types of schema markup available are extensive. Schema.org defines hundreds of types and properties covering everything from articles and products to events, recipes, local businesses, medical conditions, and software applications. The most commonly used types for SEO include Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Article, FAQ, HowTo, BreadcrumbList, and Review schema. Implementation typically uses JSON-LD format embedded in the page's HTML head, which Google recommends as the preferred format over Microdata or RDFa.

In the age of AI search, schema markup takes on additional importance. Structured data provides the kind of clear, factual, well-organized information that AI systems can easily consume and reference when generating responses. Websites with comprehensive schema markup are better positioned to be cited in AI overviews and answer engine results, because the structured data makes their information unambiguously accessible to these systems. Investing in schema markup today is an investment in visibility across both traditional and AI-powered search.

Schema Markup: common questions

What is schema markup?

Schema markup is structured data placed on a page that describes its content in a standard vocabulary from schema.org. It is usually written as JSON-LD inside a script tag in the head. It tells a machine that a string is a price, an author, an opening time or a review score, rather than leaving it to guess.

Does schema markup improve rankings?

Not directly. Google has been consistent that structured data is not a ranking factor in itself. It affects visibility in two indirect ways: it makes a page eligible for rich results that change how the listing looks, and it helps search and answer engines identify entities correctly.

Which schema format should I use?

JSON-LD, which Google explicitly recommends. It sits in a script tag separately from the visible markup, so it can be generated, validated and changed without touching the page layout. Microdata and RDFa remain valid but are harder to maintain because they are woven through the HTML.

What schema types matter most for a small business?

Organization or LocalBusiness to establish the entity, BreadcrumbList for navigation context, and Article for editorial pages. Local businesses benefit from accurate address, opening hours and geo data. Adding many exotic types matters far less than getting these few correct and consistent.

Do FAQPage rich results still exist?

No. Google retired FAQPage rich results in May 2026, so the markup no longer produces an accordion in the search listing. The markup remains valid and still helps answer engines identify question-and-answer structure, which is now its main reason to exist.

Can incorrect schema markup hurt my site?

Marking up content that is not visible on the page, or describing things that are not true, breaches Google's structured data policies and can trigger a manual action. Invented review ratings are the most common version of this and the most damaging. Broken or invalid markup is usually just ignored.

How do I test my schema markup?

Use Google's Rich Results Test to check eligibility for specific features, and the Schema.org validator to check the markup is well formed. Also confirm the page renders exactly one node of each type. Duplicate nodes for the same entity on one page are a common and avoidable error.

Does schema markup help with AI search?

It helps answer engines identify entities and relationships, which supports correct attribution when they cite a source. It is not a switch that produces citations. A page with perfect markup and nothing worth quoting will not be cited, and a page with excellent self-contained passages often is, markup or not.
