Bolt Will Not Show Your App to Google Until You Do Three Things

Bolt has a feature that makes your app readable by search engines. It is off by default, it needs a paid plan, it needs a custom domain, and it does nothing at all until you explicitly ask for it. Here is the order.

Most platforms in this space hide their SEO story in vague marketing language. Bolt, to its credit, documents exactly what it does, and the documentation is unusually specific. The trouble is that almost nobody reads it, and the defaults are arranged in a way that leaves a new app completely unreadable to search engines until you take three deliberate steps.

If your Bolt app is not showing up anywhere, this is very likely why, and it is fixable in an afternoon.

The feature is called SEO Boost, and it is not on

Bolt's capability here has a name: SEO Boost. According to Bolt's own support documentation, it serves "a pre-rendered HTML version of your pages to web crawlers" instead of your JavaScript application.

That is the right approach, and it solves the fundamental problem. A crawler asking for your page gets real HTML with real content in it, rather than an empty shell waiting for JavaScript to run.

But three conditions sit in front of it, and every one of them catches people.

Condition one: it requires a paid plan

Bolt's documentation states plainly that SEO Boost is available with a paid plan.

This is worth sitting with for a moment, because it changes how you should think about launching on Bolt. On the free tier, your app is not being pre-rendered for crawlers. Search engines are receiving your JavaScript shell. Whatever else you do, however many pages you write, however good the content is, none of it is reaching Google in a readable form.

There is nothing improper about this arrangement, it is a normal commercial decision. But it means that on Bolt, unlike on some other platforms, being findable is a paid feature, and no amount of technique gets around it.

Condition two: it requires a custom domain

SEO Boost requires a custom domain to enable. Your free bolt.host address will not activate it.

So the free address is not merely less impressive than your own domain. On Bolt specifically, it is the thing keeping the pre-rendering switched off. Buying a domain is not a branding decision here, it is a technical prerequisite.

There is a useful consequence to this, which is that you should buy the domain before you write a lot of pages. If you build twenty pages on the bolt.host address and then move, you are into redirects, and redirects arranged in a hurry lose things. Buy first, build second.

Condition three: nothing happens until you ask

This is the one that surprises people who have already done the first two.

SEO Boost does not infer your metadata. Bolt's documentation says you must ask Bolt to set the exact metadata you want. That covers the page title and description, Open Graph tags, Twitter and X card tags, the canonical URL, and structured data. You prompt for it, in the chatbox, page by page. Images you upload yourself.

So it is entirely possible to be on a paid plan, on a custom domain, with SEO Boost technically enabled, and still have every page carrying whatever generic title came out of the original build. The pre-rendering is working. It is just faithfully pre-rendering the wrong labels.

What Bolt explicitly will not do

The documentation is refreshingly direct about the limits, and knowing them saves you from trying things that cannot work.

No custom pre-rendering workflows. In Bolt's words, it "only supports SEO Boost for pre-rendering. It can't run custom pre-rendering workflows or tools like react-snap." So the advice you find in general React SEO articles, which frequently recommends exactly those tools, does not apply here. SEO Boost is the mechanism, and it is the only mechanism.

No automatic sitemap. Bolt does not generate one for you. You need to create it and keep it current yourself.

No automatic robots.txt. Same situation. You will need to add it, point it at your sitemap, and make sure it is not blocking anything it should not be.

The order to do this in

Given all of the above, here is the sequence that works, and the ordering is not arbitrary.

Step one, buy the domain. Before anything else, because SEO Boost will not turn on without it and because moving later is more painful than moving now. Connect it in project settings, then check the SSL status has gone green before you continue.

Step two, move to a paid plan and enable SEO Boost. Without this the rest of the work sits behind a wall and produces nothing.

Step three, prompt for metadata on every page. Go page by page. Ask Bolt for a specific title and description for each one, plus Open Graph and card tags, plus the canonical URL. Do not accept one title shared across the app, since that is the single most common defect we see and it reduces your whole site to one apparent page in the eyes of a search engine.

Write each title as the answer to the question that page addresses. A page explaining one thing should be named after the thing it explains, not after your brand.

Step four, ask for structured data where it genuinely applies. Your homepage is a SoftwareApplication. A page of real questions and answers is a FAQPage. A guide is an Article. Ask for these specifically. Do not mark up things that are not actually on the page, because that is checkable and being caught is worse than having no markup at all.

Step five, add sitemap.xml and robots.txt. Since Bolt generates neither, both are on you. List every real page in the sitemap. Point robots.txt at it. Check that robots.txt is not disallowing anything you care about, and decide deliberately whether you are allowing the AI crawlers, because if you want assistants to recommend you, they have to be able to read you.

Step six, submit it. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, verify the domain, submit the sitemap in both. Bing is worth the ten minutes because it reports AI citations, which Google does not, and that is one of the few free windows into whether assistants are using your content.

Then the actual work starts

Everything above is a prerequisite. It gets you readable. It does not, by itself, get you found.

Being found comes from having pages that answer the specific questions people actually ask about the problem your product solves. Most Bolt apps are one screen, which means there is exactly one search they could conceivably rank for, and it is invariably the most contested phrase in the category.

The short version

On Bolt, being readable by search engines is a paid feature that requires your own domain and does nothing until you explicitly request the metadata. Three gates, all of them easy to pass once you know they are there, and all of them completely invisible if you do not.

Get through those, add the sitemap and robots.txt yourself, and then go and write pages worth finding.
